Imagine taking a stroll down Louisville’s most bustling urban corridor, Bardstown Road. Not on the sidewalk, but right down the middle of the street. CycLOUvia is your opportunity to experience Louisville as you never have before, by walking, cycling, skateboarding, or dancing along a three-mile car-free stretch of Bardstown Road on Sunday, October 14.

CycLOUvia is part of a growing “open streets” movement where cars are temporarily removed from the city’s streets and the community is invited in to play, move, and use their public spaces to the fullest extent possible. Life at five miles per hour can be much more of a rush than speeding along at 35 miles per hour, and we invite you to come experience three miles of human-powered Bardstown Road between Broadway and the Douglass Loop.

Modeled after the “ciclovía” program in Bogotá, Colombia, where for 30 years, citizens have enjoyed weekly car-free streets, cycLOUvia builds on momentum in cities from coast to coast and across the globe to connect communities around our temporarily car-free, shared public space.

Besides offering a safe and exciting new way to experience Louisville, cycLOUvia helps to promote healthy lifestyles brought about by walking, cycling, and generally getting out and enjoying the streets. In an age where most Louisvillians move predominantly by car, bringing congestion and toxic fumes to streets across the city, cycLOUvia helps to make Louisville a more active, healthy, and livable city.

After all, streets are Louisville’s greatest public space assets, encompassing more area than the city’s already robust parks system. And they run in front of each of our homes. How we use these critical public spaces will determine how our city grows and reaches its potential in the future. CycLOUvia is an important step in realizing the value of our streets by transforming them into temporary linear parks, free for the use of the entire Louisville community.

Your support will allow us to close Bardstown Road to car traffic and open it to pedestrians and cyclists on October 14. CycLOUvia needs assistance raising funds to pay for signage, fees associated with shutting down a street including bagging parking meters, and for creating exciting nodes of activity.
